    Default I got lucky!

Went to my local Orchid Society Christmas party yesterday and did quite well in the drawing. With about 100 people, and 50 plants I won 11! I kept 6 and gave 5 away to people that didn't get anything.
    Here's the haul minus 2:

Now I need some ID and culture help:

    This was labled Rhynchostylis Gigantea:

This was labeled Onc. Mariposa 'Green Valley', but isn't it a Psychopsis mariposa?

This was labeled Mtssa. Dennis Kleinbach 'Crowhurst':

Oh, my!! I will spare you the words that came to my lips as I gnashed my teeth in envy over your wonderful haul! Stunning plants, all in bloom. Our club's raffle is so puny--we get one flowering plant, plus a bunch of bric-a-brac that is, well, again I will spare you the words! LOL

On a more serious note, yes, the "Oncidium" Mariposa is a Psychopsis. At one time, the members of the genus Psychopsis were placed in the genus Oncidium, in spite of their great differences from all other Oncidiums. (Brassia, Miltonia are much more similar to Oncidium in appearance than Psychopsis are.) Indeed, one source even says that Psychopsis cannot be crossed with Oncidiums. (If this is correct, then Bluemoon's attempt to cross his Psychopsis is presumably doomed to failure. I am watching his experiment with great interest!) This, more than anything else certainly justifies placing them in a separate genera.

Surprisingly, I still see Psychopsis papilio with tags saying Oncidium papilio, so either not all have gotten the word or perhaps some taxonomists don't agree.

At any rate, hope I haven't rambled on too long. I can't help you with the names of any of the other plants, I fear.

    Cheers,

    Rob

Rob- You should have seen what I didn't get! I most went for the odd-balls There were a dozen catts with vivid blooms the size of my hand, and three-spike cyms, and some insane paphs, and and and... but strangely (and in my opinion thankfully no phals! I'm in mid-coastal California, the weather gives people around here lots of options.
