    Default Dendrobium Newbie

    Hello,

I am looking to increase my orchid collection by adding some dendrobiums. Though I was told never to purchase these I am tempted. I am wondering if anyone has any suggestions or rule outs among the ones I am interested in that would adapt to my living conditions. I would prefer to avoid lighting. I currently have two large windows, south and east facing. The heat can be adjusted freely so that is not an issue. The problem is that I am in Milwaukee, WI and I dont know if they will thrive given the amount of total daylight available. Also among the ones that may work, what is the best way to adapt them to my house. Any thoughts?

    Here are my considerations:

    Dendrobium Copper Queen
    D Bertha Chong x D Imeld'a Romauldez
    D Bobby Messina Red
    D Bobby Messina X D Jiad Gold

Thanks so much for your help!!!

I don't know anything specific about the dends you mentioned, but I would think that general orchid culture would be ok. Why did they tell you not to buys them? There is plenty of info on the web re dends, just google them and see what happens. I would give at least one of them a try.

I agree with Ischel, get one and try it out. If your light is too low to bloom them, then you could always trade it on Orchid-bids for one that will grow in your conditions.

    Cheers,

Speaking of Orchid-bids, is it new, or is it only open certain times of the year?
Or is it something I have to sign up for separately?
    Thanks

Orchid-bids is open. People post on there from time to time when they have something to sell or trade. You must register and verify yourself in order to bid or post auctions. The auctions posted on that website will show up on the home page of this site.

I just got my Dens today and one of them is the D Bobby Messina X D Jiad Gold. You can pretty much put these in Cattleya light conditions and they'll be fine. My only worry is the watering part as I'm a Den Newbie too. My Bobby is in spike along with another so we'll see how they turn out.
