Question Is my Dendrobium ill ?

Hi ! I purchased a Den. (noid) back in the beginning of October and, through reading on this site, have discovered that it is hard-cane. You can see that the old spike grew out of the very top of the stalk. Happy to have learned that. It started growing again about a month ago and I have just noticed that there is some sort of black stuff under what I will call 'skin' on the stems. Is that mold or is this something common for Dens ? Can someone please tell me if I should do something to it or just leave it along. Is it sick ??
Thanks for your help ! Janagolf (Janet)

When you say stem, are you referring to the cane-like pseudobulb, or a flower spike?

Sounds like a type of mold. Janet, if possible, post a photo. If not possible, peal the 'dry' skin stuff off of the pseudobulb and wipe away the black stuff. If the plant is rotted or smells bad then there is a problem. I suspect it is only some mold that can easily be wiped away.

Cheers,
BD

Check out this link in our help section. Posting photos 101

Your photos will have to be resized if they are very large. The max size is 700 px x 700 px at 72 dpi. If you do not understand this, just try posting a photo using the first method explained. It will tell you if your photo is too big. If so, then I will help you resize your photos.

Cheers,
BD

a pic would help. There is a section of Dends called nigro-hirsute Dendrobiums which have fine black "hairs" on the canes. This is the Formosae group. That might be what you are seeing.

Hi again ! I'm hopeful the pictures come through. In the meantime, I have sprayed with a Triple Action Plus product for insecticide/miticide/fungicide product. Have I done the right thing ?????

Oh gee ! I pressed the square with the mountain and it asks for my URL where the pictures are. How do I find that ? It is located in my Jasc photo alblum. I don't see the smilie face to attach that way with the paper clip. Wow, what a mess I am !

Oh Janet. Did you watch the video I made last night? It will show you step by step how to post a photo from a file on your computer. Check it out if you have not done so and we will get you posting your photos soon! HELP VIDEOS

BTW - Use the "Post Reply" button and not the Quick Reply editor for all photo posting options.
