Names may change again - Laelia
The Brazilian Laelias were placed in Sophronitis after it was determined that they were not genetically related to the the Mexican Laelias. This caused intergeneric names to be changed on crosses. Many were not happy with these changes, my self included. There was no way I could accept that L purpurata was a Sophronitis. Well it looks like they may be moved again. I am not sure moving them to Cattleya is the answer either but I am not changing any tags yet.
Here is the link to the pdf file on the most recent info that could possibly have them moved again.

Thanks Ron! This is a frustrating thing for many folks. Especially when we go to such lengths to document and properly tag the plants. I will check out the pdf!
Cheers,

We could learn a lot from crayons: some are sharp, some are pretty, some are dull, some have weird names, and all are different colors....but they all exist very nicely in the same box. ...Hmmm? .

Ron, I had read about that. The rupicolous laelias (aka my new obsession) were called "Hoffmannseggella" for a while but are now Sophronitis and my laelia Harpophylla is now a Dungsia! Too confusing ... They are still all Laelias to me.

Thanks for the link Ron; time to buy some new tags.. :P
I've been strong about buying plants with tags only but now that I've bought my first two NOIDs (orchid number 26 and 27) I find that they are just as pretty so the crazy parental searches are purely for culture requirements now and not for nomenclature.
I think I forgot to say

I have always felt that the rupicolous laelias belonged in their own genus...I am sure someday they will be.

Yup, this confirms it...i'm going to quit worrying about tags. lol I have enough trouble keeping the names straight. That paper just did me in....too much information! I'll go back to buying the "Prettyyyyyyyyy" ones.

One day... One day when orchid botany is no longer mired in politics and machinations of a few dozen individuals. True science can prevail and we can all benefit from proper classifications.
Until then, keep the genus carousel moving!

Ron, I agree with you fully. I think the people involved should be put on a boat and dropped of half way between Sth America and Sth Africa.

While I don't disagree with the opininons expressed in this thread and though I do come from somewhat of a scientific background, being in the medical profession, sometimes I look at my chids and especially the NOID's and count my lucky stars that I have such wonders of nature to greet me in the morning as I enter the GH! Sure, I like attaching a name to a face just as many of us do but I can't loose sleep over all this name change stuff....I'm too old, don't want or need the frustration and just want to enjoy nature for who she is. So I will not be purchasing any new name tags!
