    Default Ascm. ampullaceum moulmeinense

I'm growing a nice orange Ascocentrum which came to me labeled as Ascm. ampullaceum 'Moulmeinense'. However, there is some confusion on the web as to whether I'm growing a named cultivar, or whether this is a varietal name. Should this plant be labeled Ascm. ampullaceum 'Moulmeinense' or Ascm. ampullaceum var. moulmeinense? Expert opinions only, please =) Thanks so much for the help!

Asctm. ampullaceum var. moulmeinense is a purple-colored orchid. If yours is orange it is most likely Asctm. ampullaceum var. aurantiacum or simply Asctm. ampullaceum.

    Cheers,

Hey, thanks for the reply. I've been away for a bit, and couldn't get back to reply. I'm not sure what to do with this one. It's definitely ampullaceum, has orange flowers so is almost certainly var. aurantiacum, and a bit mislabeled. Should I just label it as Ascm. ampullaceum?

Actually, the orange variety is correctly called 'Astm. ampullaceum var. moulmeinense'. All regular form of this species color can vary from light pink, to fushia to dark intense pink. Currently there is no purple variety that is ever recorded yet. When pink flower are taken picture, most of the time the image will give you false purpleish color.

var. aurantiacum is actually a distint species or possibibly a natural hybrids or mutation. The plant has the growth habit of Astm. curvifolium with long arching leaves and flower that is kindda look like micmiatum. But it has a slightly larger spur than most Astmcocentrum species. =)

    Comparing the forms.

Left: Ascocentrum ampullaceum var. moulmeinense (Filipines)
top center: Ascocentrum ampullaceum (Vietnam) flowers pink-lilac
Right: Ascocentrum ampullaceum var. aurantiacum (China), notice the different leaf form.
