    Talking Repotting Stanhopea Orchids

Today I took advantage of the sun shinning to do some repotting. Back in September I got two new stanhopea orchids at my orchid society's annual auction. Stanhopea Assidensis and Stanhopea insignis 'Dark Jungle' x self. Both are really beautiful plants, but were potted in 4 inch square 'solid' containers. No way for these to bloom like this, so I decided to recycle some old baskets and get these two repotted.

    Below is the final result:

Over the next few posts, I will give a step by step narration of my process in case anyone ever wants to know.

    Cheers,
    BD

Default Here are the pieces I am working with.

    First up: The baskets

These once had some pretty vanda orchids growing in them When we moved from Virgina to Arkansas, we lost many of our original orchids because we did not have a greenhouse to keep them in. So, long story short, I have several 'old' baskets in the barn with dead orchids in them. After cleaning them up, here is what I ended up with for today's repotting:

Oh and here are the two plants:

Stanhopea insignis 'Dark Jungle' x self

Default Stanhopea insignis 'Dark Jungle' x self

This stanhopea looked like it was not doing so well, so I decided to start with it.

To begin, I prepared the basket. After cleaning well, I added in some lava rock to the bottom of the basket. This should keep bark mix I am going to use from falling through the bottom of the basket when I water. There was a wire screen in the bottom of the basket, but since stans bloom through the bottom of the basket, I did not want anything in the way of the bloom spike.

When I removed the Stanhopea insignis from its 4 inch container, I was not surprised to find that there was significant root rot. The plants leaves looked a bit wrinkly and since I knew we were watering it pretty regularly, I wasn't surprised to see this:

Here you can see that there were some new roots growing but most of the plant was looking sad.

Stanhopea insignis 'Dark Jungle' x self repotting continued...

Next step after cleaning up the root situation was to add some mix to the basket on top of the lava rock. I prepared my mix earlier so that it was soaked and ready to be used. I also washed the lava rock completely before adding it into the basket.

And now, to add the plant. I put the new growth toward the inside middle of the basket. This will allow the plant to grow and fill the basket over time.

Next, I add in the bark mixture. The mix contains charcoal, red wood bark (medium, and small) coconut husk, perlite, and small lava rock.

I pack the bark in pretty tightly around the plant to keep it stable. The next step is to run plenty of fresh water through the basket to make sure it drains well and the plant doesn't move.

And here is the final result after adding in the tag.

    Stanhopea Assidensis

This guy looked pretty healthy, so I did not expect to find any issues with him.

First up, I prepare the basket as before:

Then I removed the orchid from its 4 inch pot.

Surprise! - Guess what I find. Some white moldy rot!! Okay, so I clean the old mix off well and wash the roots under warm water.

    Stanhopea Assidensisrepotting continued...

After cleaning it really well, I put it into the basket with the newest growth toward the center as before:

I fill in around the plant with my home made orchid mix packing it in tightly around the plant for stability.

Then I run water through the medium and make sure the plant is secure.

    With the final result:

After both were repotted, I hung them up high in the greenhouse so that they will get plenty of bright light. Hopefully, I will be posting some bloom photos in the near future.

    Cheers,
    BD

Thanks Brandon and Margo. No worries about the vandas - it has been almost 14 years since they croaked.
