Bob thanks for the explanation. We definitely have the temp. variation (10-15 oC degrees at nights and early morning while 25-30 oC during the day) but not for very long 20-30 day max during late Dec. Before and after that the temp is always in the early 20s.

Amey, If you go the ice cube route, may I suggest a double pot? Set the potted cymbidium in a larger diameter pot, place ice cubes in this second pot around the cymbidium pot.Cool more root area that way.

Yes, I guess it will be a better idea than putting it directly into the pot and cold shocking the roots. I will let everyone know the results.

Some of these are warm tolerant you list, ie Chen's Ruby, Nut, and Golden Elf, but the Caripepper, Firestorm, Hazel Faye, and Joypolis are not. I have grown all of these and have to grow these at higher elevation where it is cooler. Just a hint about these varieties.

I'm very interested in growing warm tolerant cymbidiums and at the moment only have a Golden Elf which blooms quite well in our hot lowlands.

Just saw this thread. I, too, love cymbidiums and have a Golden Elf and recently purchased a Cym Nut . I live in an apartment and do not have the cool night temperature requirement for the standards. I have a friend who lives in Long Island and she has one room that she keeps cool and her standards grow and bloom with no problem.

There are quite a few that should work for you.. Look especially into ones with Peter Pan (hence ensifolium) in the background.

Here are two Peter Pan crosses I recently acquired:
    First is Willunga Eyecatcher 'Barcelona'

And the second is a very warm tolerant Peter Pan cross called Peterborough
