I did it again. I went --yesterday and here was this lone survivor of the Christmas orchid massacre. Well, I steered my cart a little too close to her and she jumped in when I wasn't looking. Actually I had my 3 yr old daughter along and when I picked it up she said "it's ok if you get it, Mom." How much more encouragement do you need.
I didn't even bother to look at the roots until I got home. Pleasant surprise!
So, this makes number 27 in the phal dept. Do you think I may be addicted? Oh, and she was half off.
ooh! this is very pretty, easy to see why its/you've called an ice orchid.
these are the most common ones we see in supermarkets and hardware stores here.
very expensive too, from 25-50 dollars! EEKK!
It cost me 8 bucks. I called it an ice orchid because that is a gimmick that is used here to sell them. The instructions tell you to add a couple of ice cubes to the pot every week. I ignore that of course.
WOW! Great roots, Jonada! Congradulations, it's a beauty! Happy New Year to you & your family. Betty :-)
Thanks, Betty. A Happy New Year to you and yours as well. I was VERY happy when I pulled it out and saw all those roots!!
LUCKY! last i saw one for 25 was when i started looking for moths, about 1 1/2 yrs ago. the warehouse sells them for over 50 each, usually overwartered, wilting and in terrible condition! so i decided to look around and found a nursery up in auckland selling them for 9 bucks instead of 40 or 50.
Ha Ha, Jonada! The same exact thing happened to me yesterday! It must be some kind of conspiracy.
I had tremendous willpower on three separate occasions--it was really fiendish how our store located them smack in the center of the christmas section. But I finally cracked. The one I got was also in a clear pot, with good bark and great roots. NoID, but it met most of my criteria plus it has two spikse with a lot of fat buds still to go. I don't think it got watered since I first saw them a month ago, which was probably a good thing--hasn't drowned yet. My son is in on the conspiracy also--he thought I should get 2!
Mabuhay!
@daethen...congrats on your purchase. You got yourself a "good-buy". Don't worry about the "addicted" stuff because there's no cure. Welcome to the club.
Recently, i just purchased a couple of this "ice orchid" thingy because i wanted to increase the number of phals in my collection and they're quite cheap overhere. If one buys them with newly opened flowers, it would sell for around Php250 or $4.00 but if you catch this beauties with wilted flowers you can buy it for just around Php100.00 or $2.00. Actually, if you get very lucky sometimes this beauty would sell for around $2.00 but you get 3 pcs for it. Hehehehehe and that's where im heading next on Sunday. hehehehee
Godbless everyone.
2 bucks!!!???? *faints*
that is amazing!
tell me moja, how much are flasks of phals?
Mabuhay!
@kiwi.....i can't remember though but i guess some members here can tell you how much a flask of phals cost.
Regarding phals, if you buy the types with really big big fancy flowers it can fetch around Php600-1000 or $15-$20 dollars each. But as i've said, i don't care how cheap i got the plant for as long as it will thrive under my care its all worth it.
Happy New Year.
