Quick update, i'm now the proud owner of a Tamakongo and a Shutenno!

Gonna go with LED lighting that screws into an incandescent fixture, i'll let everyone know how it ends up working out.

Considering a shelf devoted to these little buggers!

I don't think fluorescent can ever be bright enough , but perhaps used as a supplement to natural light might help - but I have successfully grown what we used to call odontoglossum hybrids ( O.crispum hybrids) under fluorescents, after deflasking and had them 6 inches away from the tube - that was long before the idea of using a light meter ever occurred to me, and I could now only speculate how much light it gave - I would guess it was only a few thousand lux = a few hundred Fc.

    Sam.

By any means, I am not an expert on Neos, however, I have learned a lot as to how to grow them, how to make moss mounds, etc. One thing I do for the best growth durning spring - summer is to give them 'winter rest.' I grow all my orchids under HID lights. Neos are now sitting right next to the garage door, where they get much cooler air and stay dried.

Tamakongo and Shuten'nou are great plants to start with. Good luck!

Where they will be grown there is almost no natural sunlight, so the LED will be all the light the plants will receive. They'll be kept from 50-60 degrees, slightly cooler than the rest of the clan.
