Default Cattleya Hardyyana (warscewiczii smi alba F.M.B. x dowiana Large semi albas help...

Hello members, this is the only Catt in my collection. I bought it with a sheith several months ago. The sheath has now turned completely yellow. It looks to have had a "spike" developing on the inside. Can someone tell me what I may have done wrong? It is grown outside and I live in Houston, Texas. It gets bright mottled sunlight all day and I water them weekly and it is now under a misting system that goes off 5 mintues a day four times a day.

    Thanks!

Are you saying that the spike is dried up and no longer growing? Or just asking about the dried, yellow sheath? It is normal for the sheaths to turn yellow. If the spike has dried and stopped growing it can be from several things. I'm sorry I can't help you much there. Hopefully someone else will.

Thanks Nicki, the sheath has turned completely yellow. It is somwhat transparent so I can see a growth about 1" or so on the inside.

I have an Epc. (though i think it has been renamed) doing the same thing. The sheath has been yellow and I only noticed a week or so ago that to my surprise a spike is forming. Good luck!

Thought they would turn yellow after the spike gets large enough to break through. This is all new to me.

It varies. Some do yellow before and some after. I've even seen and read about some that have produced a spike without one. Just keen an eye on it to make sure it does break through ok.
