    Default Cattleya Orchid Experts - HELP! Need ID and info

    This is my latest acquisition and, because it wasn't tagged, and was a bit wild and woolly, was a steal. There are two pbulbs with sheaths (DOUBLE sheaths), both of which have multi-budded spikes. The spike in full bloom has 9 blooms; the other is still in bud and has 8. Some of the pbulbs are unifoliate and some are bifoliate - mostly unifoliate. The leaves are typical big-catt-shaped, but are unusually stiff as far as my experience goes. The pbulbs are medium-shaped - neither fat nor slender. The whole plant is about 48cm tall, each pbulb about 24cm tall from base of bulb to base of leaf - the leaves are also about 24cm long. The blooms average about 12cm wide - natural width, and the color here is pretty accurate. I'm wondering if this is a Portia, but am really not sure at all.

    I'd LOVE as much input as possible!

    Thanks,

    Maura

    Once I have an idea of this, I'm going to post some photos of pbulbs close-up - I think the plant has suffered from something (scale??) in the past, but is ok right now. But first....

    It's a beautiful orchid but I'm afraid I don't know the name.

    Beautiful plant! Love it. C. Portia?? Pretty sure it's a Cattleya bowringiana hybrid.

    I agree it is likely a Guarianthe bowringiana hybrid (or Cattleya if you prefer clinging to the past). Cattlianthe Portia or Cattlianthe Porcia were my first thoughts, classic old hybrids. But there are certainly dozens of similar possibilites, and really no way to ever be certan.

    Maura
    Though I will not say for sure that it is NOT Portia, I would say that my Catt. Portia is deeper in colour and there is some yellow in the lip. I have a Pic. posted here on the Forum, have a look.
    I hope someone can positively ID it for you.

    I thought Portia at first look but the markings in the throat aren't correct, too many. I'm thinking also that the "coerulea" form of bowringiana was used also. The double sheathing is also common to bowringiana & labiata. I'm interested to see the plant pics also. Please take a close up of the base of the canes.

    I will just nod to whatever has been said before.
    1) Guarianthe boringiana hybrid +++
    2) Labiate Cattleya offspring +++
    3) Porcia --+
    4) Portia ++-
    5) Similar hybrid to Portia +++

    I looked at Guarianthe Portiata (Portia x labiata) at it also looks similar.

    Another look at this is more confusing, I still can't place the lip/throat markings. They don't fit to any of the crosses mentioned. Not the I remember or can find.
