my mom had a phal that did that. I told her not to remove the keiki. It has progressed very quickly in size as the roots on the main plant were fine. I don't think it's a terrible setback if the plant is otherwise healthy (although it may skip blooming for a year while the keiki grows into a larger plant).

I also think it is a stress factor ,is there another of the smaller leaves on top of the lower one in the picture ?
Radical change in the length of light and culture will cause things like this . I think it will be fine once adjusted to yuor conditions . Just my HO. Gin

That is a root, which is now longer. So far the plant seems happy despite the odd growth.

    Default UPDATE!

Today when I was checking my 'chids, I picked up this chibae and to my horror I saw mealy bugs deep in the crown and deep where the crown meets the leaves! I checked all the surrounding plants, no bugs anywhere. When I got the plant I saw NO sign of bugs, and believe me I really check closely. So, now I think I may have a new suspicion as to why the plant was so stressed that it grew SUCH stunted leaves, mealies in the crown, deep in the crown.
