Default Brassia Rex 'Sakata' - Fragrance

I was visiting a fellow orchid buff in town and was admiring his especially nice Brassia Rex 'Sakata'. (I'm getting an Odbrs. Fangtastic Bob Henley 'HOF #4' this week) I was surprised by the unusual fragrance. I'm wondering if anyone else has detected the same scent that I did - or if my nose is lying to me... I thought the fragrance was like the smell of wood smoke. It was not heavy, but distinct. I found it very pleasant.

Sooo anyone else ever notice this particular scent??

brassias are heavily fragrant. i've heard a zillion descriptions of the fragrance. probably smells different to everyone. I had a Brs. Edvah Loo--strong fragrance, don't think I registered it as "smoke" but I can't really describe it.

I haven't been able to detect any smell on them myself. I've tried smelling Brassia Rex Sakata in bloom - nothing to my olfactors! And the same for my Brassia Eternal Wind Sato - nothing. Maybe my sniffer is not working quite right?

My friend put his into sunlight for an hour or so in the AM to get the fragrance going.

Brassias smell strongest when left in light. Most have the smokey to rose like smell but, B. Lawrencea has a wonderful sent of vanilla.

Yep, the fragrance is light-activated on a lot of them. I don't think I registered "smokey" though. Lemony maybe, or spicy? Hard to describe: SMELLS LIKE CHICKEN.

Oh, sure - make fun of my poor old olfactory receptors!! I stick to my original description, having visited again last night. Wood Smoke - definitely!

Hmmm that gives me an idea....

now that you mention it, I think at the end of the day it did smell a little smoky to me. during the heat of day though, it was a somewhat different, but pleasing scent.

I have a brassia, I never has a 'smoky' smell to it. It was more of a jasmine scent. Really strong smell too. At the right time of day, you could be in the door to the room and smell it.
