Not really - it was a true burgundy/ruby/black - the light on it may have made it look bronze in the photos - vinicolors are very hard to photograph properly.

Hi Katherine love that orchid, I saw a few at a plant shop here La Vegas estates, and they were really dark red like a dark wine color, I promised to go back to get one because I wanted to buy another phal that had a flower spike with about six buds which are just about to become lovely flowers, I think I might get a few for the Easter holidays just waiting with baited breath, lol but our orchids are sold so expensively here from about one hundred fifty dollars depending on how old they are and sometime you get without any flowers and they may cost about one hundred or so, most of mine were about two hundred dollars.

WOW! I could not grow orchids if I had to pay that much! I just bought my first on-line orchid and the total with shipping was $45. that's pretty much my limit, and then I have to think hard about it, as i am on a fixed income.

Hello Maura, we grow pretty much everything here, the La Vega estate I mentioned has almost every fruit tree under the sun and flowers too, sometimes he has such an array of orchids but the ones that people buy the most are what I noticed he would have more of, like the phals. He goes away to other countries and buys plants of fruit that we would not normally have here but would grow well in the tropics thereby introducing them into the island. A very calm and wonderful place to spend the day out and these last few months have been real scorchers, but the breeze keeps us from combusting(LOL) Katherine if I was to do the exchange rate on what you bought it would come to about three hundred and ten dollars but I love orchids and I am a retired person so once in a while I treat myself to God's beauties

And "Hilo" is the name of an orchid nursery in Hawaii, which regularly releases new hybrids bearing its name.

Oh gosh, Maggs, that's crazy expensive! I sometimes buy Phals for $5 - 10 at the stores (usually when they are done blooming) and full price tends to be more like $20. Of course these aren't the fanciest flowers out there, but I can afford to risk them on my beginning skills! I spent about $45 on two blooming size orchids at the orchid show nearby last weekend - a Paph in flower and a BLC just coming into bloom. I'll have to get some good pictures and put them up in the appropriate places soon. Now, I could have spent $85 on a Paph that is blooming size, but not in spike... of course that's a huge fancy one with the long trailing petals. I'm starting with a little guy that's very cute for my first real Paph.
