I do buy clones of good orchids but the risk there is that I might not, personally, like the blooms. The seedlings are tiny but incredibly cheap compared to the blooming size. Yes, seedlings are a weakness. I do love the satisfaction of watching them grow over the years.
I hope you find your perfect cattleyas!

I would really look at Ports of Paradise before you choose a green. I believe there is one clone that has an FCC. I have had 2 of them and they smelled fabulous and looked even better - or was it vice versa? Anyway, that would be my choice.

Thanks, Maura! I actually did look at the Ports of Paradise when you suggested it earlier as a possible substitute for the Helen Brown. The Lester McDonald is still winning out, though...I think it's because I'm looking for more of a contrasting color in the lip. All the greens I've gone gaga for have had a bold contrasting lip and/or throat.

The Ports of Paradise is quite lovely, though! The awarded clone seems to be 'Emerald Isle' if the internet is accurate...

Thanks so much for weighing in! This has been a fantastic thread...I've loved every post! It's great getting people's recommendations, but it's doubly wonderful to see which Cattleyas the various members here are really passionate about. It's neat to see folks singing the praises of their favorite Catts! And now, whenever I see a Ports of Paradise, I'll think of you!

The other Rlc Ports of Paradise with an FCC AOS is the 'Gleneyrie's Green Giant'. I have posted pictures of mine in OTF and they are huge measuring nearly 8 inches when well grown

OOh... I just looked that one up. It's definitely a beauty!!

Okay, I have to admit, that one's stunning. The lip seems much more full than that of the 'Emerald Isle' clone, and the overall form is much more pleasing. All I saw before were the 'Emerald Isle' clones because that's what popped up when I typed it into my browser, and the 'Emerald Isle' didn't knock my socks off. But the 'Gleneyrie's Green Giant' clone is absolutely AMAZING. It's funny how such a small change as the shape of the lip can make an orchid go from "okay" to "wow!!"

Arggg... I thought my decision was made... now you've gone and thrown another stunner in the mix! This clone may just bump the Lester McDonald out of first place for greens. Thanks, Yew, for bringing this stunning clone to my attention!!

By the way, what's the fragrance like on the Ports of Paradise?

Fragrance is like citrus-y gardenia, but not as sharp - how's that for a nonsense description? Believe me - it's magnificent.

The other thing to take into account is this : you don't want all of your plants to be in flower at the same time, and then nothing for months and months... Cattleyas are seasonable . If X flowers in April in your locality, it pretty much always will, and so on. Two similar hybrids may have quite different parents which dominate, and hence may flower at quite different seasons, for you.
So, consider when you want flowers, and visit local shows or vendors (if you are lucky enough to have them) at the right time. And btw, you won't get that kind of result from buying seedlings, that is more of a chance thing in this respect.

I'm very poor at describing fragrances, so I'll go with Maura.
