Default Problem orchid plant: Rk. Regal Red 'Paradise'

    Hi all,

I got this seedling at an orchid show last October, and it was labeled Rk. Regal Red 'Paradise' . I just looked up what Rk. stands for, and got Reinikkaara, a hybrid of Aerides, Ascocentrum, Eunanthe, and Vanda. Really don't think that is what this is, first off since it is sympodial.

Secondly, the little guy is in horrible shape; it had black areas on the leaves soon after I bought it which have turned brown now, but it was growing a new shoot that looked promising until it blackened abruptly and died a couple weeks ago. Not sure if this had to do with cooler weather; it got down to 45 to 50 F/ 7 to 10C for several nights and a phal type dendrobium that was also outside dropped leaves at the same time.

Any thoughts on what this guy is and how to treat it? The plant was originally outside under a shade tree but is now inside while I figure out what care to give it.

unno i got a plant that did that same shit...the roots were shit cuz the medium was broken dong into soil like crap...then i mounted it on caimite weed and the new growth did the same damn thing urs did...the i used a fungicide called Acrobat and it worked...its on its way now growing well...i could be wrong but from your pic you definitely have a cattleya type hybrid there...that pott is toooo big will stay too wet too long...and use more porous mixture.... bark and charcoal and crock etc

I would recommend trimming the dead node off as this looks to be pythium rot that attacked the new growth. I would either treat with Physan-20 diluted or you can use household cinnamon on the cut as this acts as a natural anti fungal remedy. This is defiantly not an RK but Pot.Regal Red ' paradise' ( Blc. Regal Pokai x Pot. Sally Taylor ). Most likely you are keeping this too wet and not enough air circulation and they do not like to stay wet and like to dry out slightly before the next watering. Hope you find this information helpful let me know if you have any further questions.

I went and looked up what has been registered as Regal Red. There is a Rhyncholaeliocattleya (Potinara) Regal Red

Rlc. not Rk. Yes! Sounds more like it. I was figuring there was some kind of transcription error somewhere along the way.

I bought it bare root and initially (in my ignorance) had it in an even bigger pot than it is in now. This pot is probably still too big? The media is a mix of bark and charcoal with the Spanish moss just there on the very top for looks. While inspecting the plant more yesterday I found a new (so far) healthy looking new shoot so we'll see if this one makes it. Thanks all!
