Post Phalaenopsis - What is this thing I found growing on my phal?

I'm more than a little embarrassed about my situation. This is not a proud moment for me.

Background: I've been growing orchids simi-hydro for about two years with a good bit of success. Over the summer I move my orchids to my covered front porch so they can enjoy the heat, humidity, and airflow.

While I was bringing them back into the house for winter, I noticed one of my phals had been going through a rough patch. (I'm not sure how I missed it or what happened exactly, but I'm guessing it missed a watering or two.) Its two mature leaves are wrinkled and somewhat yellowed. However, it already has two replacement leaves already growing that are each about 1" long and they look quite healthy. It is now back inside in front of its favorite window with all its friends, who are doing rather well.

Question: What is this thing I found growing on my phal?

It is growing down where the roots usually grow, but it seems to be a leaf rather than a root.

    Thanks for all your help!

This is basal keiki (meaning small plant). Mother plant will usually produce keiki when very mature or in stress like your case.

Keep humidity very high. Pull it out & check if there any root rot.

    Goodluck

    Thanks for the reply!

Should I cut it off so that the plant focuses its energy on saving itself or should I keep the keiki?

I would let it grow. This may be the way the plant saves itself.

    cheers,
