Default Slc. Jewel Box is the wrong color

Several years ago I purchased an orchid that was labeled as "Slc. Jewel Box". Blooms reliably each year. However, the blooms are not red as they are supposed to be. The flower shape is the same as "Jewel Box", but the flowers are a pale soft orange and the lip is edged with lavender. I've been trying to find out what it is for years. Anybody know?

Post up a photo of the blooms and let everyone take a look. Someone may have the same plant and be able to identify yours.

    cheers,

Since it is a hybrid between Guarianthe (used to be Cattleya) aurantiaca which is orange, and Cattleya Anzac (1921) which used to be SLC, and is pink, there may be some color variation. I wouldn't be surprised to see the occasional orange, and a google image search confirms that.

I concur with Sean. Most pictures of Slc Jewel Box is of the var. Scheherazade which is red but as Sean says there are variationsin colour between orange and red due to the parentage.

Yes if yours is just "Slc Jewel Box" then that indicates you likely have a seed grown plant, not a clone. (Although genetic aberrations can and do occur during cloning.) That in turn means that the flower color can vary from those normally seen at shows and on line.

Scheherazade typically as a bit more of a purple hint to it, so not a true red. Much nicer, IMO, is the other clone commonly seen ... Jewel Box 'Dark Waters'. It is a rich vibrant red with fiery overtones.

Btw, there is a Jewel Box 'Orange' -- a terribly unimaginative name, but very accurate. I have one of these and it is a very nice orange.

Still searching for a replacement 'Dark Waters'. Unfortunately, most of the ones I have come across have been virused.

As others are saying, there's no reason that Jewel Box must be red, and the well known clone 'Orange' was mentioned, which can have a rosy-lavender band on the edge of the lip, which sounds a lot like the one mentioned. The Anzac parent has typically yellow, red, purple, orange and variably white/pink/lavendar ancestors, and comes in range of colors as you might expect. Guarianthe aurantiaca can be white, cream, yellow, and every shade of orange, to nearly pink, red and purple, sometimes with contrasting spots. You could get a Jewel Box in almost any color possible in the Cattleya Alliance with a little effort. The plant in question is probably Jewel Box. It happens a lot that the common mental image of a species or well known hybrid is not at all representative of the variability that actually exists.

Basically, you have to reduce the size of the image. Max size is 700 pixels x 700 pixels. Here is a link to how to post a picture here on Orchid Forum.
