It's coming into Autumn here now, which is making me think ahead to Winter - how/where I am going to house the excessive number of orchids I bought this year . My indoor climate skirts very close to the edge of what many Phals can tolerate, with outdoor temps dropping to 11C (52F) and indoor window areas hitting 14C (57F) some mornings.

I have grow areas that are slightly warmer than others, but not everything will fit there. I'm going to have to choose some Phals to spend Winter by those colder windows.

My question is which ones should I choose? Are there any clues in the visible structure of the plants that could tell me which Phals are likely to be the most or least cold tolerant?

Its nearly winter for us too here and atleast you will get a milder winter than us. Last year I had to leave two hybrid Phals outdoors due to the lack of space inside and I have to say they did not make it. The cold damage grew day to day and by the time winter has finished they were beyond help and it was too late. I was devestated as one of them was a rare and a favourite of mine. This year i will bring all " Warm growing " orchids inside not taking any risks.

Well... you could get a variety, and see which ones don't die too quickly when the temps drop. Or you could check the Baker sheets for what temps different ones grow under year to year.

Even in a very mild pocket of Sydney I find that many Phals suffer too much outside during Winter - and even indoors near cool windows! Even if they don't die they may be severely stunted for several months. It sets them back and is too risky.
