Exclamation Cattleya bud drop - BAD luck streak!

    Hello forum~

I am so so sad. It all started a few days ago when I received a gorgeous, budded Mae Bly 'Splash', one of my 'wish list' catts. The 2 buds looked a little cranky but I figured they were just travel weary. They wound up taking a turn for the worst (continued to yellow & shrivel) and I decided to just cut the spike when it started turning BLACK.

2 days later, I received a new Dewey Forest 'Kudos'! Some of you may have seen my posts where I was devastated by a sick Dewey I received as a gift a few months back. I couldn't save it and had been searching for a replacement. I finally found one and it arrived on Saturday. It looked pretty good but in desperate need of repotting. I didn't want to mess with it while it was budded so I just moved the whole mess into a bigger pot and added some bark, planning to re-pot after the flowering. Everything looked okay, buds were about 50% exposed from the sheath.

Fast forward to today. I notice that one of the buds is getting a little yellow. Still traumatized from the Mae Bly event, I decided to pull the sheath down to check the integrity of the buds.
    This is what I find:

There was no moisture in the sheath and no discernible reason for this! Is there anything I can do? Honestly, I'm having a really crappy few days and these plant mishaps are really making it worse. I am starting to dread buying anything in bud or sheath now since my last few deliveries have been huge disappointments. I am not even going to get into the root rot ordeals..*sigh* I could really use some encouragement and / or hopeful feedback.

    Thanks a bunch!

Unfortunately, we all experience the same problem from time to time. I just lost a bud on a paph that was starting to open. Sunday morning it was on the floor. No understanding why!

Thank you guys! It's really such a bummer. I've acquired so many plants and have seen so few bloom! Again, this is why I keep buying phals but they're just not doing the trick anymore...

P.S. Svetlana, I will never turn down a good cookie!

Your experience is similar to mine. I acquired a lot of orchids really quickly. Many not in bloom when purchased. Still waiting for a lot of them to bloom for the first time. But as I slowed in my buying and the ones already purchased adjusted and started growing, they did come on line and flower. Still have some to go but new spikes pop up all the time now.

Oooh! You're in Long Island?! I'm in Dutchess County, about 2 hours from you probably, depending where on the Island you are. It takes me about 2 hours to get to Jones Beach Theatre so that's how I gauge it! Maybe sometime in the future we can get together. I would love an orchid buddy. No one in my life really gives a hoot and I'm pretty sure they're mentally rolling their eyes when I go on and on about my plants....lol

I was planning on doing my first Hudson Valley Orchid Society meeting next Sunday. Hopefully I can still make it because the next 2 are cancelled so there won't be another one until autumn. Enjoy your meeting, it sounds like a lot of fun!

Yes, i am in Bethpage, 15-20 min north from Jones beach.
And i would love to have orchid buddy too! Some of my coworker like orchids but just to look at your blooms to Ohh and wows ). One girl caught the fever but too brock to spend fortune on plants for now. And my 10 yo son does not understand why most of plants are in his room (the only one that have East window).

We will definitely have to buddy up then! It's so much more pleasant to discuss orchids with someone who shares the passion. I have kind of gotten my mother into it a bit but she's only interested in looking at the plants when they're in flower. She doesn't have the passion for it. In fact, I have to do all of her re-potting, which I love so it's fine. My husband is polite enough to feign interest when I blather on and on about orchids. He is genuinely impressed with some of them but I don't see him catching the fever either.

Would it be possible to switch rooms with your son? Have you done the shadow tests for your other windows? Depending on MANY factors, you might get enough sun in other areas for the phals at least. I'm very lucky in that my little house gets SO much sun that I can literally put the phals wherever and reserve the best spots for the more demanding plants. They've even invaded my bathrooms! I am stunned that hubby hasn't commented about THAT yet! Who doesn't want to see a beautiful plant when they're sitting on the bowl though?! I even keep orchid books in the bathrooms in case anyone gets curious...LMAO! I am totally serious too!
