Default Dendrobium - Grocery Store NOID Dendrobium?

Bought it even though there wasn't a tag because I fell in love with the bloom coloration. The hue in the photo isn't true. The real color is closer to a lavender blossom; more blue. My best guess for a suitable ID from blindly googling around is Dendrobium aff. Jaquelyn Thomas. Am I way off-base name-wise? I'm pretty new to orchids in general.

Also, does anyone have any tips for replicating blues/violets/purples in photography? I had a similarly difficult time photographing some Irises - blues kept turning into mauves and purples.

I have one called Den Genting Blue that is much like this one minus the goatee. May have some same parentage.

    I like yours too!

It is hard to say the correct name but with that goatee in the lip hopefully someone has one just like it and can help. It is pretty and the goatee makes it even better!

Thanks everyone. At this point I'm just proud of myself for figuring out that it is a Dendrobium phalaenopsis-type hybrid. Or a 'Den. phal' as I'm learning.

Congratulations for getting this lovely 'blue' dendrobium. You have every right to be proud of yourself for figuring out the type of dendrobium and even as far as possibly getting the name right. This may or may not be Jaquelyn Thomas - gouldii x phalaenopsis , which is a very old cross and registered in 1949. Seeing as how variable both parents are I wouldn't be surprised that you might have got the name right. I had a Den Jaquelyn Thomas 'Blue' as well as well as a 'White' variety about 40 years, but the form and colour of the 'Blue' was inferior to the one in your picture. However the flower count was very high; with long graceful sprays. Since then there have been many repeat cross of this in Thailand and Singapore using superior, selected clones of both parents and this could result in the specimen that you have. This is not to say that this is Jaquelyn Thomas. Also this could be a hybrid of Jacquelyn Thomas . BTW in Malaysia we tend to classify this type of dendrobium as an Intermdiate unless it had the full rounded shape of Den biggibum or Den phalaenopsis - the reason being its form is intermediate between the twisted, narrow petals of of its parent, gouldii in the Section Spatulata, and the the flat, full rounded petais of the other parent, phalaenopsis Section Phalaenanthe.

As to replicating the blue and violet in the digital photos, I find that some cameras cope better than others. My older Nikon D70 and D200 could not satisfactorily replicate this colour but I have no problem with the new D5300. A photo magazine has suggested we play around with the WB White Balance setting on the camera and we might just hit on the correct combo.

I can never photograph a blue but my camera skills are not good even when I use my sister's camera. That is a beautiful flower. I buy many NOID if I like the flowers.
