    Default Masdevallia Dawn Glow

    I hope you guys can bear with me this week. I've ordered an encyclopedia of orchids but it hasn't arrived yet . I've also ordered four or five new plants, and don't know how to care for them. This one in particular as I don't have another orchid like it. It's a Masdevallia Dawn Glow with three spikes! I tried to find it in an online encyclopedia, but no luck. Do any of you know about temp/water/light conditions for this guy? thanks in advance

    Your hybrid is gorgeous and is melanoxantha x constricta

    I belive these are warm growing/warmth tolerant masdies. I would say keep it evenly moist all year, low-medium light (think paphs or oncids) and a temperature range of 50-90.

    I think Floridians are able to successfully grow this one, so it shouldn't be that hard in a bright windowsill and fairly high humidity.

    Good luck!

    This is an old thread, but I don't want to get the camera out, so I'm gonna use the old picture of this plant. My Masdevallia Dawn Glow(sp?) is being difficult. The picture at the top of the thread is just after I purchased the plant, in bud/bloom. the blooms never completely opened, and burst soon after the picture was taken. I figured that it was the change of enviornment that made them go wacky. Well, now its about six months later, and a few weeks ago i was just thrilled to see two little spikes coming up. now, they are in full bud (if you can call it that...the buds look like the wicked witch of the west's index fingers). But the older bud has stopped progressing, and alas, today i see the tell-tale sick yellow that indicates a bud bust. I have one spike left. Is there something I should know? I've been feeding/watering on a regular basis. Strong light from a southern window...but not direct. I sing to her....mostly Tina Turner, but sometimes selections from Micheal Jackson's Thriller album. Any tips would be appreciated. Any hopes of saving the second spike?

    Here are a couple of links that might help

    constricta = http://www.orchidspecies.com/masconstricta.htm

    This genus are as a whole, cool to cold growers that do best with a fine mix in pots. They like low light, high humidity and watering throughout the year but be careful not to overwater. They are a new world genus of 350 species and are found from Mexico to the southern Andes. The highest concentration of species is found from Venezuela to Peru through the Andes foothills and highlands.

    Cat,

    I know a couple of Masd whisperers. PM me and I'll give you their e-mails. They'll be excellent consultants.

    I have a constricta that is mounted on bark slab. It came in with 3 buds, all blusted after a few days. It developed another one 2 weeks later, and I moved it from my office to my home during the heat wave and the bud gave in to the heat, plus a couple of new growths. I then moved it back to my office, it is doing pretty good now, has bee putting out a few leaves and roots. I saw two spikes are forming and I hope they will make it this time.

    I really my Masdevallia!
    Well, i've been growing the same Masdevallia Dawn Glow! It needs relatively cool temperatures,and when in bloom the temperatures and not be to hot or else the buds WILL blast! I have been growing my Masdevallia Dawn Glow for at least 2 years now! and it just bloomed with 31 spikes!
