I've got some good books and a database. I don't mind helping out - it just takes some digging and this week is really busy. So please don't mind if I take a couple of days. The Dendrobium sections can have very different culture, so I'd rather give you the more precise info based on the geneology of each plant (that's where the database comes in handy.)

Thank you Julie. I am reading avidly both books and on the internet to try and increase my own knowledge but there is overwhelming information out there. Wish there was an orchid society near me but there isn't. I am sure there must be other orchid growers around but I haven't met any yet!!! I keep looking in the hope of finding some local knowledgeable people. My family is finding this fairly new obsession very amusing and it would be nice to actually meet someone else with an orchid passion!

LOL - don't worry! You have us, a much broader-based and more experienced orchid community to help you in the meantime!

My aunt is a home garden specialist at the botanical gardens, and her usual advice to me is to let the plant do its own thing. As long as the pseudobulbs/stalks look fine (plump and firm), and aren't shriveled, just let it follow course. I wouldn't water it, but keep it misted and/or on a humidity tray so the stalks don't shrivel, and then gradually start watering when you see new growth. A number of the dendrobiums that I've had have lost all or most of their leaves before going dormant.
