Default Floofs and Catts, Oh My!

I just received two new orchids as a birthday present (Happy Birthday to me ).

They are, however, both catts--and I haven't ever tried to grow one before! More specifically, they are:

Pot. Harng Tay 'Fantastic' (Pot. Prosperous Lee 'Ruby' x Pot. Wan Ta).
Hknsa. Kat Golden Eye 'Ember' (Ctna. Jamaica Red x Slc. Mahalo Jack)

I googled the photos and they look beautiful--so any help or thought on how to keep them alive would be wonderful.

What do you pot your catts in (sphag, bark etc etc). HOw often do you water? Seriously--I keep my phal, paphs and phrags alive and well, but I have ZERO experience with floofy catts.

Catts like to be potted in bark. They like to dry out between waterings, and they'll want more sun than your Phals and Paphs.

Those are the basics - I'm sure others will want to elaborate.

Good luck with yours and Happy Birthday!

Those are both wonderful small catts! You will really enjoy them. I have similar crosses in my collection. They are all in bark and get very high light. I water once a week, but that varies based on each persons growing conditions. Make sure they get DRY before watering again. I fertilize lightly year round, and then a little higher level when new growth or roots are showing.

    Good Luck!

Thanks guys. This is a new realm for me. I am so excited about the new babies (okay they aren't actually baby plants, they are blooming size)! Now to figure out how to keep the floof alive!

Congratulations on your new babies, I also am just starting with catts. I have a lot to learn.

Maybe we should PM each other and take turns asking the experts around here our stupid questions. That way we could look foolish only half the time!

Default Got brave and repotted . . .

So those two catts I mentioned above were potted in very tight, very decayed sphag. I worked up the courage to repot them -- and while it was probably a good thing (seriously the sphag was black toward the middle), I am a little concerned that I did it correctly so that my catts will like it.

Also, the older growths, that no longer have leaves are starting to turn a little pink. Is that normal?

Catts do sulk when repotted, and the old bulbs are the most likely to fade and die when the plant is stressed. It looks like you did a fine job to me.

Looks good, Sadie! The guy on the right has really dark leaves - is he getting enough sun?
