Default Dope! I snapped my Paph RubyLepard x HsinyingWeb

I snapped off this bloom while trying to stake it into a better position to display it.... I'm having a bad maudiae year. I snapped of this bloom and an albino maudiae type blasted. Luckily I still have two more maudiaes in high bud.

I wish it could be used for something like a corsage....anyone need one? The stem is too short for a floral arrangement.

    Oooo! I love the colors!

Fren, I do it once a year. I'm not sure when I'm due for another, but it's coming up...egads!

Sorry, but unfortunately it does happen.

Oh Geeze I hate it when it happens. Actually it has never happened to me because I can't get a paph to set a bud. But I really feel your pain, we have all snapped a bloom spike and you just want to kick your self.

Ok I'm calmed down now LOL...it happened so fast! Last year, this same plant blasted when I had it shipped in bud with another one from Toronto in the winter time (silly me). I think the heat pack caused it to blast, so I was excited to see the bloom this year. Weird that the other one I got didn't blast.

Hey what do you think caused the bud blast in my albino paph maudiae. The entire spike developed in my house so it was accustomed to my growing conditions. I can't think of any reason why this plant would abort in high bud. And my other maudiaes didn't abort their buds yet (knock on wood).

Cin, I think the sudden cold weather most of north america faced helped my paphs set bud! They all decided to go bud at the same time, right after the cold hit. I see that you live in FL where it isn't as cold. Maybe a little cool drop may help your paph set bud, if it is mature size.

Florida has had cold - I've lots of family down there and they're all bitching. They're not getting much sympathy!

Paph blast is tough to guess, if conditions have been pretty constant and the plant's been getting enough water.

I'll give my ethelyne lecture, since many are new...

Ethelyne is a gas that will cause bud blast and flower drop. Ethelyne is given off by ripening fruit and incomplete combustion (fireplaces, candles, smokers, propane heater, etc.)

It's not a little thing. After college, I helped out in an apple stand one fall. The owner was a florist and had lots of mums for sale. We put them in the stand overnight, and the next morning every petal had dropped every flower. It was the ethelyne given off by the apples.

I have no idea if it was a factor in this instance, but it's good to be aware of it.

Could it be a dirty humidfier?? it smelled of pee at one point and I had a little ultrasonic fogger thing buzzing the dirty water into the air so my room smelled like pee. Fruit flies got into the humifier and rotted. I don't wash it out usually but I just refill it with water from my milk jugs cuz its easier. I'm gonna clean my humifier of its flies right now...

I read somewhere that paphs are fairly resistant to ethylene and cattleyas are the least resistant. Maybe the albinos are special....or that ethylene conclusion is wrong
