The WORST orchid abuse I have seen is in the very reputable nurseries in my area. Went to one the other day, looking for deals because it is so late in the season, and everything is frying, and the condition of the orchids was unbelievable. The ones to the back, with no blooms or tags, were in a pile of broken pots in the back of the green house. They still wanted between $10 and $12 a piece for these. The ones to the front with blooms where in horrible condition, and they were priced between $20 and $30 dollars. They were also soaking wet. I think they were taking 20% off of them. I asked if they would go down, and I was told no. I purchased some medium, bloom boast, and slotted clay pots. When I went to the register and told the lady about the condition of the orchids, she looked at me like she could not believe I had the nerve to question their ability to care for plants.

Went down to box store and bought 2 plants in bags. The plants were pretty large. You know the ones with the picture of what the bloom will look like. The roots looked healthy and the plants looked fine except for a couple of yellow leaves on each one. The garden manager marked them down ˝ price from $9.97 to $4.50 each. I got a colomanara ‘Wildcat’ Rainbow and a militassia Everglade. They had 4 or five more. Think I will go back and look for yellowing on those. The manager was very nice, she offered to put them ˝ price, I did not ask, and she was happy I was taking them. Since getting them home, I have seen some progress in their growth. Actually see the beginning of spiking on them. I have bought other plants and things from this particular store, so the manager sees me occasionally. Not that I would not buy from a reputable orchid grower, I will once I get some ground work plants, but now is the time to run into some of these stores and pick up some filler plants for your collections. Most of the orchids, etc. are in the area that they use for seasonal items, and they are starting to do the Christmas displays (although it is 90+ degrees right now).

Will someone please save me from myself. Went back to the home imp store that I got the orchids at the other day and I bought 4 more today. I just can't stand to see them die. My rescue plants for today are Dendrobium Yellow Splash, Dendrobium Samphan Brown, Pot Burana Beauty 'Burana' (saw this one on the web for $135.00) looks quite spectacular, and finally Lc. Gold Digger Orglade's Mandarin x Epi Rufum [yellow]. Of course none of them were in bloom and were soaking wet in ceramic pots with no drainage holes. At least they were 50% off. I good price if they live. If not at least I'll know that I tried.

What sections of the box stores are you finding bag babies? I've never seen them!
