Actually, this is why I am worrying - I just said "what the hell" and got 2 catts last weekend (at that big show that I posted pics of) and it looks like one of my buds is blasting. :-(

But otherwise what you describe sounds exactly like what I do, regarding who gets to sit where in the window. Though starting now, everything gets the maximum light I can give it!

Ooh, I just realized yours is the same plant that I took ca. 20 photos of at the show - no wonder I love yours so much!

My cattleya are like that they produce a sheath and at first its green but two months ago it turned yello i thought the buds that are developing inside had died ... It is rainy day here so i was thinking the rain had something to do with it what i did was i open the yellow sheath partially just the top and put it somewhere hotter cause i thought there is water inside or it is still wet. But to my surprise when i opened it there are small buds in there developing so my hunch was that the sheath got wet thats why it turned yellow. But even if it turned yello it still serves as a protection for the buds forming inside since water cant penetrate. I would suggest you wait for a couple of days or a month before you cut it off. all my cattleyas are in that habit. New growth or at times new growth with sheath green at first then at times turn yellow then starts to swell cause the buds inside are getting big then the sheath starts to open on its own cause of the bulging buds then the buds starts to open..
