    Default What's In A Name?

I recently purchased two Catt's. Both tags said they were 'red' and I didn't pay much attention to the actual name, until I did a search to see what I had purchased and noted that the names were "the same", maybe. One is labeled Blc Chia Lin 'New City' while the other is named Blc Chia Lin. In my search I found several Chia Lin x XXXXX and several variations in flower color whcih might be simple photo rendering. So until the flowers open (both have buds) they might be the same...or different? And can there be such color variation as shown in the pics I downloaded from another site of Blc Chia Lin 'New City'? So what's in a name, anyway? Just my curiosity and, well, I can't wait til they open, because if they are the same, I'd like to trade it back to the store for something else.

If they turn out to both look like the second one, i'd be happy to pay for shipping and your costs, that second one is stunning!

oh and to answer the question.......lighting, nutrients,as well as other factors, can cause drastic variations in color. Ive managed to get the same phal to bloom in three dif colors from white to lilac to purple.

Default Everything is in a name!

What you are seeing here is genetic variations between each offspring of the cross that made Chia Lin.

Each seed that was produced could potentially be given a clonal name. For example, the hybridizer chose a seedling that he/she thought was particularly beautiful and named it in this case 'New City' and entered it in the Japan Grand Prix. It won top honors in 1996. This plant was cloned and each genetic copy of it was given the same clonal name, 'New City'...

Other seedlings of this grex were given other clonal names or no clonal name a t all.

So basically what you are seeing is the genetic variation between siblings.

The second plant is stunning, I hope you are surprised with two different colors. Enjoy!

Thank you for those scientific facts, clintdawley, your posts are so informative.

Cjcorner-wow, really???? 3 different colors? That's mind boggling, it seems the plant is blooming darker from what you said, do you think age affects that too? How would we get a richer color on a plant? I am glad we found this site!
