We could learn a lot from crayons: some are sharp, some are pretty, some are dull, some have weird names, and all are different colors....but they all exist very nicely in the same box. ...Hmmm? .

I have a Brassavola Little Stars, but I only got it last year. It hasn't bloomed yet for me. So...I was watering just now, and guess what has a bud (ok, just one) and is opening?!

Diane, how long do the blooms last? I'm supposed to give an orchid talk at the local library on Feb 7th. Might it still be around in 3 weeks?

Oh, yes, they will still be open. These have been open since Thanksgiving.

I know I asked in a PM but thought a quick go around about how the care of this plant compares to nodosa.

What do you think is the best for them: bark, mount bare, mount with moss, basket bare or basket with moss?

Phal Aurelia Franklin peloric, Paph Magic Lantern, Paph philippinense, Phal Leopard Prince x Brother Danseuse

Low Bud/spike?

I'm no expert - my B. nodosa is dying a slow and painful death in bark. But my other Little Stars loves its pot of big bark. I think it has to do more with your growing style. Most people I know grow nodosa mounted or in baskets with some sphag.... I'm just weird...

We grow our mounted, but it is in the GH and gets the right humidity. We also grow it on the shady side for the most part. It is tied to a piece of wood with a little bit of sphag.

So, in Phal light conditions with a bit more elevated humidity? I know it is important to let the roots dry out before totally rewatering and a mist every couple of days.

That is correct! -or at least the way we do it here. Remember, everyone's growing conditions are different. I think there is actually a thread on here somewhere where we discussed this or a very similar orchid.

Mine are in moss and are doing ok with pretty bright light. The only trouble with their drying out between waterings is that I have to really soak the moss when I water, for it to take up enough water. Once sphag gets crispy it takes time for its absorbtive power to return.
