    Default No Longer Sad

When my mom became ill in 1995, our family gathered at her house. My dad and I were walking in the back yard garden and talking of mom's illness. One of the plants there was a small quince. I told my dad how I've always wanted one, and he dug it up on the spot and gave it to me. Unknown to me at the time, my mother and sister were watching from inside the house.
My mom passed away six months after that day and only then did my sister tell me how mom had cried when dad dug up her favorite plant and gave it away. My heart was so broken when I learned that, but sis told me mom asked her not to tell me.
That little quince became a living symbol of mom's love for me. I cherished it an tried to nurture it but it never grew over two feet tall and only had a few flowers each year for the next five years. Then I married the man of my dreams. We bought a house and moved the little quince to our new home. Mom must have approved; today her quince is seven feet tall and blooms almost contiuously throughout the year, but it is most beautiful in the spring before the leaves come out.
This January has been particularly warm here in NW FL and mom's quince is putting on a spectacular show of love and I wanted to share it with you.

This is a beautiful and moving story, Tami.
I love the idea of having a plant passed on from one generation to the next.
    Amazing color on those blooms!

I hope it grows like a weed, Cin, yours is the only cutting/division that has lived of the ones I've given away. Mom likes you!!!

Thanks for sharing, Tami! I'm sorry your mom isn't with you any longer, but your quince is a wonderful symbol of your mutual love!

And why wouldn't she approve of Cin???

what a touching story! Sounds like your Mom is smiling down on you.

My grandmother always had a beautiful, fragrant, red rose bush in her yard. When she passed I was afraid to dig it out but took a cutting of it. I have moved a piece each time I have moved. She passed 22 years ago. She was the person that turned me onto gardening...I still miss her dearly but when I smell the fragrance of her rose I can still feel her presence.

A nice heartwarming story. Your Quince could get to be very large. I remember as a kid my grandmother had 3 Quince bushies that coverd the side and back of the garage. I use to play under them. I took a division of one that now is under my kitchen window. I have to trim it back every year or we couldn't see out. I am thinking of moving it too the fence line where it stretch a bit.
