just got word from jim cootes, this plant is a haemanthus multiflorus, also called "blood lily", and a native to south africa.
it apparently may contain a cardiac glycoside which causes cardiac irregularity and sudden death.
i got some of that yellow pollen on my hands and had a hard time washing it off, i dont know which part of this plant is causing the danger.

i forgot to mention that you can actually watch the flower opening, from the closed phase it takes pretty much 2 hours (i timed it) to open, another part i really enjoy while bumming in my hammock.

    cheers

The "red ball" is called haemanthus multiflorus, aka "blood lily" aka "football lily". It is popularly called as "football lily". I got a bulb and planted it last autumn (around this time last year), and it finally bloomed in April with the first summer showers we had in Bangalore. It is pretty gorgeous when it blooms!
