    Too bad the recession affected the place. Or was the downgrading even before the recession?

    The aquarium closed several years ago because of a lack of funding. While I don't live in the city and really don't keep abreast of what happens there and haven't been downtown in more than 20 years, I think it would be safe to say that political mismanagement in many aspects of Detroit caused things to fall apart; not only with cultural things but the schools and so much more. The aquarium and botanical greenhouse and gardens were at one time just beautiful... a destination worth the long trip. I can't speak to its current appearance but the orchid house had a waterfall with a pond at the bottom and lots of pennies and even more orchids arranged in a very natural setting... it was a sight!
