Don't know if Siberian Iris are technically "mini" but they grow no taller than 18" in my dirt. I love them for their abundant grassy foliage that shades the clematis roots behind them. And they multiply like crazy. Not variegated foliage, but very dark purple flowers with a yellow spot in the throat, about 2.5" blossom size.RSJ

Mike

yes - i like you - i really - really like you (said in a low, monotone voice)

We were all wondering if you were ever going to join the best and most exclusive group in town.

About mini iris........

I'm wondering if you are talking about the bulb type or rhizome type? The really little ones that bloom early in spring and are the bulb type would be Iriis reticulata. These I can't grow here - too cold.

The rhizome type, probably less than 10 inches tall are some of my favorites. And yes, there are hundreds and hundreds of varieties. I've never seen one with variegated foliage. That sounds very cool.

I only have a few of these, but they are the first ones to bloom here. In fact, they are blooming now. One of the reasons I do like them so much is because of the color selecton. It's just wonderful.

There are also other classifications of iris other than the tall bearded hybrids most people know. Some of them are much shorter, bloom earlier and have more interesting flowers in my opinion. Maybe I'll work on putting together something about these unless there's already an iris expert out here? Volunteers?

As long as we're talking about mini iris. Here's a picture of my Iris cristata. This is one of the species and really nice. It also stays very short. They also don't need as much sun as the hybrids.

I need to get a F$@#%^#%!! Camera.

I love the mini Kev. I think mine is the rhizome type.

We have many types of hybid Iris as there is a wonderful grower nearby and this time of year you can go pick the flower you like and dig them up. So many colors.

Mike

I did some searching today and couldn't find any mini variegated. How tall is yours?

The only variegated one I know of is Iris pallida, but that one is about 12-18 inches tall.

Well, I guess if you stretched out the thin leaves it could be 12 to 16 in tall but the leaves flop over and are grasslike(sort of).

Woah, that is huge. Mine must be a cross of that, if that is the only one that is variegated.

My mother has a really miniature iris. She got it, in turn, from her mother. Thus, it's got to be a really old variety! Anyway, it's a rhizome-type iris and, even including the blooms, it's generally no more than 4" tall.

Cheers,

R2D2 (Rob)
I'm so jealous of MikeWa. I want Kev to like me!!!!!!!
