    Default Amorphophallus urceolatus

This is about a month late but I hope you dont mind me sharing this here.

I was given a dormant tuber last Feb/11, 3 of them to be exact (size of my fist)... this is my
first time delving into amorphophallus, i've heard that they are stinky, but I am intrigue with the
flowers so I decided to give it a try. I have made a lot of mistake in keeping the tubers and
almost lost all of them to rot, fortunately I was able to save them. I was so excited when around July one of the tubers decided to wake up, at first I am not sure whether it is just waking up to flowering, and when I confirmed that it is in indeed flowering, I tried to smell it but I could not detect anything... so I decided to bring it inside the house (Big mistake).

The next day while I was a work I got a message from the wife, she tells me that maybe theres a dead
rat in the ceiling. And when I arrived from work that day, oh boy the house really stinks of dead
rat upon opening the front door. So since the wife is protesting in anger I have no choice but to
bring it back outside, but the stink lingers on for 3-4 days... we've tried scented candles, perfumes
etc... nothing worked. But still whenever I pass by the flower I really have to stop and appreciate
how uniquely beautiful it is... now the flower has fades it lasted about 5 days.. but the other 2
tubers are waking up and it seems that it is flowering too... oh cant wait.

Since then I have been able to collect about 8 species of amorphs, and I keep on teasing the wife that
I hope someday they would all bloom at the same time.

It is beautiful, but I would not want to have that smell in the house. And having all of them bloom at once - EEK!

    cheers,

Well if it is up to me I would love to collect more, however, I have a very limited growth space and these things eats a lot of room especially when in leaf stage.

Actually if I have the space I would want to have Am. titanum and Am. gigas, however since I lack the necessary space... I am now looking for dwarf species.

I love it! I have a friend that works with these and can't get enough of them.

Well if the flies and/or carrion beetles did their job, you should have some berries forming on the spathe.

My A. Konjac bulbs haven't gotten large enough to flower yet though I'm not complaining. I like the foliage. Got my bulbs from the parents of a friend of mine. They made the mistake of letting one bloom in their house too -- they had not known how potent the stench would be. By the end of the first day of blooming they couldn't take it any more. That night they cut off the flower, put it in plastic trash bag an tossed it out the door. The next morning when the father got up and went outside to more properly dispose of the offending bloom, the plastic bag was gone. Some poor critter was probably very disappointed when it finally got the bag open to find a vegetarian meal.
