Default Hard Freeze Waring For South Florida

We have been blessed with a mild December. Nothing like last year. I spent hours dragging plants in and out of the house and garage in 2010 and 2011. January is usually the coldest month of the year for us in S. Fl. and I wasn't ready for this early cold front. I hate the COLD!! We are not suppose to get out of the 40s all day and we are looking at teens and twenty's, tonight. I packed the shadehouse. This is the first time the truckload of vandas I bought have met my the other 100 or so vandas. All the platyceriums are stuck in there as well.
The winds are up to 30 and 40 miles an hour ....here is hoping all the millions of staples hold on the 2 layers of plastic I put up.

    on a side note:
All the Cyms are on the back patio except for two tropicals. I don't think they will be harmed. It never gets below about 38 on the patio. But growing cymbidiums is a new hobby for me.

Sounds like alot of stress and trauma over at Cathys Bontanicals. Cyms are very hardy and even more so with drier media in pots. Some leaves may get damaged but thats all. Cold spell may induce spiking. Make sure all the dried sheaths, old leaf/spike remains around bulb area base are gone to save any sneaky rot incidents.

This cold spell will be a test for my vinyl enclosed porch. Turned the heater on last night and maintained 72° while outside was 41°. Tonight will be the true test. I know we shouldn't complain about an occasional cold snap when we normally have such great winter weather, but it is Florida.

It froze here last night. My little pond pump tubing was frozen solid this morning. I hope the pump didn't burn up. Our greenhouse heater is set for 53 degrees this year. Usually we keep it a bit warmer, but with the cost of gas, we cranked it down a bit. I added in two additional fans to circulate the air around. Feels nice and warm in there compared to outside this morning!

    cheers,
    BD

I'd expect your cyms will be just fine, Cathy. Most have a good deal of cold tolerance.

Martha, I'd suggest giving your sis a call when she gets home and ask her how she's enjoying that "warm" Florida weather.

It is 19'F right now but this is Ohio. Is this unusual weather for Florida?
