Default A day in Kew, 2011

When I dragged Qi over to Kew last year I was surprised to find there was a Flower Festival in full swing in the central hall of the Princess of Wales Conservatory. Masses of orchids everywhere! Here are a few snaps-

1- One of the many displays

2- Qi finds a reminder of home, dancing ladies (Onc sphacelatum, I think) popular in Myanmar it seems

3- A huge hawk moth made of bark and other plant material

4- My old friend, the ancient Cycad in the famous Palm House. A Dioon species, here since the 17th century, long before the present house was built. This makes it the oldest pot plant in the world (and surely the oldest living Cycad: in the wild they don't get to survive as long)... one of Kew's greatest treasures... the trunk is almost horizontal by now

I was able to visit kew a few years ago. I really enjoyed the Henry Moore exhibits all over the grounds at the time. Not many orchids when I was there though.
    Cheers,

No way! The tradition at Kew with orchids has always been half a dozen pots on a bench in flower, and whatever else happens to be open in situ. They are now all in the PoW conservatory displayed naturalistically hanging from rockfaces and trees... and still the small pot display on a side bench.

Wish I had a photo of the new Alpine House opened last year: it cools by clever manipulation of natural convection without any machinery, and actually works! To do this it is built in a totally novel shape and looks like a huge piece of art rather than a glasshouse... it is jawdroppingly beautiful. I thought I was dreaming: we just don't build anything so beautiful or clever! It is absolutely in the same league as the palm house- an instant icon.

Most welcome, Betty. Reckon I'll cool it with the photos for a few days: I still have so much learning and exploring to do here! Apparently I am now a "senior member"... Don't know where that came from , because I really feel like a rookie. And I just love everyone I have met here so far: you all add up to a great community.

Fantastic Cycad! Hard to believe each and every nodule on the surface texture of that horizantal trunk was a leaf frond. And if that is 100% correct? i wonder if curiosity caused anyone to do a count?

Lovely flowers. Awesome hawkmoth and sweet cycad (I've always loved cycads)!
