Default Are lily buds poisonous to squirrels? I hope so.

I just sat and watched a squirrel jump up on my balcony, break off one of the buds on my lilies, and start to EAT IT. The internet is full of posts of people asking if this is possible, and other people saying they don't think so, but I saw it happen. My lilies are my favorite outside plants, and as I'm sure you all know, if they lose a bud, it's not like they're making any more that year.

I've never even called rats vermin, really, and I am totally going to start calling squirrels vermin after this. My LILIES. RRRRRRR!

Oh no, so sorry Victoria. Guess that squirrel must have been really hungry or your lily buds were extra delicious looking to him. Hope he will not return.

    cheers,

Yeah, squirrels can be a pain. One once ate every rose off a bush i'd just bought the day before. They also like to dig holes where you put plants so they can hide their nuts. But since we've moved here they are more entertaining than a pain. They never come up to the porch, have never eaten my plants....and the babies are too fun to watch as they play chase back and forth across the back fence. They are so tiny...lol...and they go tearing along. They also have a tendency to miss what they are jumping for and are better for entertainment than the t.v. some days.

    Oh, I hate squirrels!

For years, I couldn't keep them out of my yard and they always got to the bird feeders. Last year my husband found one squirrel-proof bird feeder that actually works. I had such a good time watching them trying and failing to get anything!

I'm usually an animal lover as well as a plant lover, and normally I'd be entertained by them just like Connie. But RRRRRR! If they'd eaten all my orchids I would have been even more pissed off, too. I woke up this morning sleepily imagining running an electric fence out along my balcony. Which is like 6' x 10' and doesn't have a plant on it worth more than $15. So. . . maybe a little overkill.
