Kitty you will very quickly have far more plants than you know what to do with from all those leaf cuttings. Carolla is absolutely correct -- there are an ENORMOUS number of AV hybrids out there.

Seriously, Bruce, leaf propagation with AVs is brain-dead easy and each leaf will often produce more than one plant. Cuttings can also be done from parts of leaf -- not just the petiole (leaf stem).

I always top water, Carolla, and never have an issue. Problems like you describe are typically due to one or more of the following:
    1) watering with tap water or water with fertilizer leading to mineral deposits on the leaves
    2) watering with water that is too cold
    3) water droplets remaining on the leaf while the sun is shining on the plant (the water drop can act like a little magnifying lens).

Love the flowers on Gloxinias, but most glox tend to like cooler temps as I recall. Don't think they would handle my dry air well either.

It's drier than dry here! We have cool nights and hot days in the summer (and air conditioning) and keep it pretty normal (high 60's low 70's in the winter). I find the Gloxinias easier than the AV to grow. As long as I know whenever they look sad to just cut off the leaves, give them a rest, then water and feed well, they come back and bloom like mad. I keep them in my east window. I'd get some pictures, but they are in the sad looking phase at the moment... hehe

I do water with tap water, its what I have and its pretty hard/Alkaline. I top water my one tiny one sometimes, but there is a gap between the leaves I am careful to use and to keep the water off the leaves.

I always top-water, too. I use a small watering can with a narrow pouring spout--I stick the spout in between the leaves to water, so the leaves stay dry. I'm wary of bottom watering because it does not flush the chemicals in the potting medium. My grandmother had many African violets and she propagated from leaves with the leaf-stem dipped in rooting hormone and inserted into damp vermiculite.
