Some of the leaves did remain small after the over-trimming fiasco. I am just happy it has leaves to nourish the roots. It was nearly naked for 6 months.

I'll leave the wires on until, the 2 branches are rowing the direction I want and are a bit more 'woody'. I don't want it to remove too early. But I do check to make sure the wire on the trunk is not getting too tight.

I am unfamiliar with 'defoliating' to reduce size. Last one I had, stayed small without any coaxing by being in the small pot. I think if the roots get tight, then the leaf size will also reduce.

Here it is 11 months later. I tried to get as close to the same angle etc. as I could to the original post.

    Here it is today.

Most of the leaves are small and getting smaller as they grow.

I did not put it outside....well, I did but again, I forgot about the leaf drop that comes with the change in environment with ficus and pulled it back inside before it lost too many leaves.

I had 2 bonsai more then 20 years ago and they did well, when I moved I gave them away. I have been thinking of getting back into bonsai's for awhile now and have not done so but after reading this post I think that I will be starting up once more. Thanks Harvey for getting me to spend more money...

All of mine failed to survive my neighbors care-taking on my first vacation after moving to Colorado in 1998. All of the ones I had I had from young stock, so it was heartbreaking to see those 5-7 year old trees die after all the work I did in training/grooming them.

But I have to say, orchids are much more interesting that the trees. But I still love seeing bonsai!
