Default Seedling of Japaness Red Maple

I love maple bonsai. The seedling germinated from the seed I found under a maple tree during a trip to Japan last November. I got 3 seeds and only one made it. Red maple trees can rarely found in Hong Kong, so we have to go to Canada, States and the neighbouring countries to enjoy the scenery. Please advise since many of you are familiar with maple trees.

Maple trees grow here easily when provided enough water. I would not know the requirements to grow in a container though. Maybe someone else can offer help.

    cheers,

Many of the maples require cool to cold dormancy periods. However, I don't know if yours does.

I do know you will want to give it a very big pot for several years until it forms a trunk of desired thickness to then begin the bonsai process.

    Best of luck!

It died after my temporary absence from home for 15 days . During that period, Hong Kong experienced heavy rain and hail. Better luck net time. Thank you for your advice, Pavel.

    So sorry to hear that!

Japanese maples grow well on the west coast of the USA, where my parents live in Seattle. It is pretty wet and a mild climate. I guess heavy rain and hail was too much for the baby though. Be sure your pot drains well. I have a Japanese maple my parents got as a seedling quite a few years ago. My climate is almost too harsh for it - we get -30 degrees F during some winters, its very dry (mine is planted out next to my house for shelter) so I water it and it is windy year 'round. It gets over 100 degrees F during the summers here, but our nights are cool. I live in a semi-desert climate. It's marginal for many maples, but the tougher ones (like the Silver maple and Amur maple) do well here.

Hopefully that will give you some ideas how to grow one if you get another Japanese maple in the future. They can be SO pretty!
