Default The best time to go to Kelabit Highlands

    Hello everyone,

planning to visit Kelabit highlands in Sarawak Borneo (and nearby Apo Kayan region in Kalimantan) I would like to see some blooming orchids there.

What time of year would you recommend for such a trip (with respect to blooming)?
Are there some months really unadvisable?

I think about March or April not, is it a good choice?

    I appreciate any advice.

    Wayan

Wayan, I've been there in April and the weather was quite well, but don't expect dry weather for a week. Malaysia - Klima und beste Reisezeit. Year later, I also went to Kuching in August. The weather was better.

Hi, thanks for reply, I finally decided (bought plane ticket to KL) for the end of March and beginning of April.

Is there a place (village) in the Kelabit highlands you could especially recommend for orchid walks?

wayan,i have been to Kelabit Highalnds and many surrounding places. There are pitcher plants and orchids around forest in Bario. To see more orchids try the village " Pa'Lungan" which was 3 hours walk one way. you can walk to Pa'Lungan from Bario if you don't need a guide. The home stay owner can tell you the direction as there is only one peat sandy path use by human and water buffalo. The authority will cement the road connection but not sure what is the progress.. You can get a guide in Pa'Lungan. The guides there are really incredible as they can tell you plants/herbs usage and the local name.yes, most of them speak English. There are lot more places to visit and trek if you have the time. For example
1/ make a round loop from Bario-Kalimantan( Indonesia ) - re-enter sarawak to the village of Ba'kelalan. This will take 3-4 days depending on your walking speed and how often you stop.

2/Alternative- walk from Bario to Mt Murud summit and then walk to the village of Ba'Kelalan. This will take 4-5 days.

3/ Another interesting route was Bario - Batu Lawi - Bario. This route you will pass by Batu Buli which is a pitcher plant habitat containging an endemic species only in Sarawak.

Home stay are available in Bario and Ba'kelalan.prices are very reasonable with 3 meals. In Bario home stay owners are always around as they also help to transport locals and goods. I can write more but if you required more info pls email me.

I would love to ask more, because I fly to Sarawak this Saturday, but as a junior member I have no way to contact you. Can you, pls, send me a private message with some contact info?
