We actually got three fruits of different sizes, Ian. Since we couldn't eat all of it fresh, my aunt made her favorite "ginataan", a sweet concoction made of coconut milk, glutinous flour rolled into balls, sago starch processed into pearls, taro, sweet potato, ripe banana, very soft coconut meat from a coconut sport locally called "macapuno", and of course the jackfruit.

Actually Zainal, all this talk about nangka is making me hungry. I think I will have a late night snack of fresh, sweet nangka. And of course, the smell... LOL

Three gentlemen from Malaysia share my passion for nangka...Ian, Cattan, and Zainal. It's good that the two nangka trees nearby are still laden with fruit.

There used to be a nangka tree on my parents house, just left it there and they kept fruiting like that. Dad cutted it cause drivers liked to bring girls and do all those under the nangka tree. Now my dad buys nangka quite often.. how tragic ,.. if only it's still there

Ah, Angel your 'ginataan' sounds very much much like our 'Bubur cha- cha' ; I believe I had a similar dessert in Medan when I visited this Indonesian city.

BTW we have a very good hybrid 'nangka' here which we name 'Nangka Madu' or Honey Nagka to indicate how sweet this variety is. However the prize for the most exotic variety is 'Nangka Tanah' which comes from where else but our Island of Legends, Langkawi Islands. 'Nangka Tanah' means ' earth or ground nangka' And the fruit is supposed to grow underground at the base of the tree. But I have it from reliable sources that orchard owners actually pile up sand around the emerging young fruits that form near or at the base of the trees and allow the fruits to mature covered in sand and soil. This process apparently enhances the taste and sweetness of the fruit. This particular variety of Nangka fetches a very high price - 2 to 3 times the price of the common variety.

Cattan,.. Yes, many types of everything from nangka here, i dont know them anymore theres too many , i still get pleasant surprises doing culinary tours in indonesia. Common is called gori. Its vegitable dish from nangka coocked with plenty of herbs and coconut milk. even when the boiled seed is tasty almost taste like big peanut. Here they burried durian, mango, and many others like that too, to make it sweet and mature faster. Also at home, just put it inside rice container or the sack, it works the same way.

'Nangka Tanah' is different from the forced ripening of harvested fruits. Nangka have a habit of flowering and fruiting from the base of the tree at ground level or slightly below ground level . Some fruits are said to be formed below ground level and mature completely underground, but as I have mentioned farmers tend to 'help' this process along by burying the young immature fruits with sand and soil as the so- called Nangka Tanah fetches a better price.

There almost similar preparations of jack fruit here in south India and they are delicious. They are cooked even when they are small (hand sized) raw fruit.
