Default Visit to the Kadoorie Farm & Botanical Gardens

Went to visit this lovely mountainside botanical garden/farm today (more info here). A bit late for the orchid flowers but still fascinating all the same.

Great place to visit in HK I never fail to visit the place every time I visit HK. Btw my son works there as the chief conservation officer (animals) and Dr Stephan Gale co-author of 'The Wild Orchids of Hong Kong' is the man responsible for the plants there especially orchids conservation and propagation. Hopefully some time this year I'll visit HK and Stephan has promised to take me to see the wild colony of Paph purpuratum growing in situ in HK island.

    Great shots of the orchids.

I was in HK last week on Vacation but missed this place. Visited the flower market there and got a flask of a jewel orchid and a variegated Phalenopsis seedling. Did not know that the farm had orchids on display,.

That's a pity! But it's not the easiest place to get to without a car as it's in a relatively remote part of HK. Sounds like you had a fruitful trip to the flower market anyway? What is a jewel orchid? Any pictures you can share? It's tempting me to go to the flower market

It was more a vacation for my Daughter to visit Ocean park and Disney land. I was very excited to visit the Flower market. I was seeing a lot of species but most of the vendors spoke only Chinese do don't know what is what so did not buy. I think what I got is Anoectochilus formosans. It was a big flask with about 20 plants may be. I have already deflasked it and potted in a aquarium jar. I will share picture tom.

Always wish to have a chance to see Paph purpuratum growing in situ in Hong Kong. Yew, the spot must be a well kept secret, otherwise all the flowers must have gone

Lovely jewels, Luke. Yes the location of the Paph purpuratum is known to only a few conservationists. A picture of these Paphs appears as the front cover of 'The Wild Orchids of Hong Kong'. This is truly a fantastic picture taken by Stephan Gale.
