Iris family, not an orchid. Blackberry Lily is probably the most common common name. Formerly Belamcanda chinensis or Pardanthus chinensis, it has been reclassified as Iris domestica based on DNA sequencing. It isn't just orchids that are going through extensive DNA based reclassification.

There are some similar hybrids called Candy Lily that came from crosses with a more typical Iris appearing species, (Pardanthopsis dichotoma or Iris dichotoma), but this appears to be just a very nice Blackberry Lily not one of the hybrids.

Haha, Luke, I have had exactly the same question since first seeing these growing on the roadside! I guess the name comes from the seeds - I tried to plant one before (thinking it was an orchid) but nothing came of it...

I have this growing in my garden alongside the orchids. It's not an orchid though.
