Default Sailing adventure in Aegean, August 2008

Here are some pics from my recent sailing cruise in the Aegean.
As soon as we left the Kalamaki Marina (Athens) and unfurled the main sail, it was torn like a paper towel. We headed back to port and waited for a new sail to be fitted.
Then we headed for the Cyclades.
    The other pics:
Kithnos, an isle in the northern Cyclades complex in the Aegean. The bay and beach is called Kolona and a preferred destination for all cruisers and sailboats as it's at a reasonable distance from Athens (4-5 hours for a sailboat, 2-3 hours for a cruiser).
The quiet marina in Loutra, Kithnos is also a hot spot for all those tired sea travellers (yeah having a tan and swimming all day can be quite tiresome hehe). Had a delicious dinner there, mostly fish and sea food, of course!

Here are some pics for the other cyclades island we visited: Tzia.
Obviously me enjoying the perfect waters...
And some pics in the small bay-marina called Vourkari. Yeah the last pic is our charter boat. It's not always a good idea to have a bigger boat in the background of a photo...or your boat comes out very very small :P

The first pic is the capital of Tzia, Hora. It is built in the highest peak on the island to prevent pirate raids in the medieval times. You cannot spot the Hora from the coast.
As we left Tzia, the weather became unpredictable. This is our best man navigating.
The meltemi, a strong northern wind sweeping the aegean every summer can be at times very strong and pin the boats in a marina for days, with winds from 25 knots (6 beaufort scale) to 45 knots (9 bf. scale) and waves up to 7m high. We tried to stay ahead of the weather...headed back to the more protected sea of Saronikos and to the isle of Aigina. Fortunately it was nice and breezy in aigina.

Here a sunset in Agistri and Aigina, from where we returned to Kalamaki, Athens. All in all it was perfect, and next year we're all planning a trip to the Ionian sea and more island hopping: Kefalonia, Lefkada and Zakinthos.

Oh wonderful! I love seeing all these shots of the Greek islands and sea. I was able to visit Greece in 1997-98 over the 'old year' holiday. We actually were able to take a boat to some of the islands during that trip as well. I was teaching a study abroad course on Greece and Greek Art/ Culture. It is one of my fondest memories as I met such wonderful people there.

Thanks for sharing your photos with us. The boat looks perfect and was probably a 1000 times more fun than the big boat we had to take to accommodate 18 - 20 students. LOL.

    Cheers,
    BD

If I still traveled abroad I would have to add Greece to my list of places to visit someday. What a beautiful trip you had. The boat and sea air must have been great....well except for the waves part. The pictures were beautiful, thanks for sharing your vacation with us!

What a treat to see your beautiful pictures Giovanna! You live in a beautiful part of the world and it looks like you had the perfect relaxing vacation. If I spent several days on a boat like that I would come back red and blistered!

Thanks for posting those pictures, it looks like you had a great time (who wouldn't have a perfect time sitting on a big inflated turtle in the agean sea, having a cold beer! ) Same as Bruce, your photos bring back memories of trips I took to Greece & Crete when I was still living in Europe, it is an incredibly beautiful country.
