I know this is a woodpecker, but does anyone know his name? He is almost as messy an eater as the blue jays!!!!!!!

THAT is the red-bellied (or zebra-backed) woodpecker. He will eat bugs, nuts, seed, suet, some berries. Usually stays in the same area, doesn't migrate south. Likes to live in tree cavities.

Heeheehee...... the red belly IS really there - but you really have to look close and invade the poor bird's privacy. Yep, I peeked once!

Birders are voyeurs. Well, in a way. But I agree that the Red-bellied Woodpecker has got to be named after one of the least conspicuous markings a bird could possibly have!

    Cheers,

    Rob

Okay, I thought it was time I contributed something to this thread, other than my comments. So, I'm enclosing a couple of photos of two birds I saw last weekend. (My friend Alfred, who I was with, is the photographer, not I.)

The first is a Great Gray Owl. This is a bird not often seen away from the boreal forest, but not too hard to find in Manitoba where I live. Visiting birders often request we go out and look for them.

The second is a Spruce Grouse. It's related to the more familiar Ruffed Grouse, but is slightly smaller and more colorful. This is a male--the females aren't so heavily marked with black and white. Spruce Grouse are often ridiculously tame and we were able to approach this bird within about 3 metres (10 feet).

    Cheers,

    Rob
