It's a Night Heron. I just can't tell if it's a Yellow Crowned Night Heron, or a Black Crowned Night Heron.

Yours is a Black Crowned Night heron.

This is a shot I took of a Yellow Crowned:

Both are adults. The Yellow Crowned has longer legs than the Black Crowned.

    Hope this helps.

Excellant shot Anne! The feathers on the wing look almost like a photonegative to me ... very cool!

So the "Yellow" crown looks white on yours ... just the way the light is hitting it or only yellow in breeding males or ........?

Thank you Bruce, and you too Pavel. This is one of my personal favorite shots.

Beats me. I've never seen one that looked yellow, and the Sibley's Guide to Birds doesn't say. I might have to google it and see what I can find out.

Interesting........ Wikipedia doesn't mention anything about it having yellow on it's head, but says it's white. But this site:
Yellow-crowned Night-Heron, Identification, All About Birds - Cornell Lab of Ornithology
does mention a yellowish crown stripe.

Pavel, you might want to check out that link. You can access the info on the Black Crowned from that page by clicking on the "similar species" link, and you can even hear what they both sound like.

I think it maybe just individual variation. I saw a couple of Yellow Crowneds in Mexico, one had a very yellow crown. We have Black crowneds in Europe, the last one I saw was the North American subspecies tho !
