Yes, the Giant Swallowtails do...most butterflies have only one or two plants that their larva can eat on. The Giants don't lay very many eggs and I have never seen any kind of long term damage from the amount of foliage those few caterpillars need. Moth caterpillars on the other hand can be quite damaging...like the tent caterpillars.

Black swallowtails lay on fennel or dill and eat it down to almost nothing...as do the monarchs on milkweed. The monarchs are losing many of their host plants from development and the more milkweed people plant in their yards the better for them.

If I ever have a place with a yard I want an entire garden for all of the butterfly larva to feast on!

Once again, amazing photographs. It was cool that you caught her laying an egg. Thanks for sharing those especially. I now know what to look for here.

    Cheers,

Monarchs eggs are very simliar...a bit smaller and not so yellow. They often lay on the flowers too. You will more than often find the caterpillars on the crown of the plant where the tender growth is.

Milkweeds leaves fall off steadly from bottom to top as it grows so laying near the bottom is risky for egg laying.
