Default Orchids and others from Western Mexico

Hi all... in a conversation with Brutal Dreamer... he suggested I start a thread with some of the photos of my 'home away from home'... in Colima, Mexico... on the Pacific Coast... both scenic and of the native orchids that I have found... so here goes.

The view of the Volcan de Fuego [Volcano of Fire] that is less than 20 miles [30 kms] from my home.

More than 200 plants in flower... and the only tree with orchids in the entire pueblo...

    Default Oncidium cebolleta...

In Dec 2000... my friend Efrain Reynaga called me and told me about a tree that had an orchid growing on it and the tree was going to be cut down because it was a hazard to motorists...

1st picture... tree that was to be removed as falling hazard...

2nd picture... Oncidium cebolleta that we removed/saved and remounted on a tree in Efrain's mother's yard...

3rd picture... close-up of the very dark flowers...

    Default Oncidium [now Trichocentrum] cebolleta...

In the central plaza in La Huacana, Michoacan, Mexico...
several of the trees have many of these plants growing in the branches... and this example had a flower spike almost 2 meters long [over 6 feet]... and most of the flowers here were much less deeply colored... compared to the previous post.

Typical area views... north of La Huacana, Michoacan, at about 1000m elevation
In this part of Mexico... in December... the average daytime temps reach 90F... and the nights drop to 65F...
almost NO rainfall for the next 4-5 months.

    Default Encyclias and others...

3 Photos of Encyclias and other orchids found near La Huacana.
It seems that I just missed the flowering season for each of these plants... as I found a few drying blooms on a couple of the plants.

1st photo is of a huge clump of an unidentified Encyclia species...

2nd photo is of a different tree with more of the Encyclias...

3rd photo is of a moss & lichen covered oak tree with several different species growing on it.

Default Rhynchostele [Odontoglossum - Lemboglossum] cervantesii...

A charming little plant found in several areas near Lago Patzcuaro, and Morelia, Michoacan.

One interesting thing about this diminutive plant... is that it grows best on the UNDERSIDE of the Oak tree host... tightly mixed in the mosses and lichens.

Although the most of these I have encountered are white... there is also a lilac... and a pinkish/purple colored form in the nearby areas.

1st photo... typical shriveled but apparently happy plant on it's host Oak tree...

2nd photo... the UNDERSIDE of an Oak limb... notice the seed capsules on the two nearest plants.

3rd photo... the little charmer... just finishing blooming... New Years Day 2000.

That's it for tonight... more to follow in the next few days.

    Default Guarianthe [Cattleya] aurantiaca...

Thanks BD... you had a good idea... it's fun to revisit my archives...

The next up is this bright orange member of the Cattkeya alliance... recalssified into a new Genus that reflected the common local name... "Guaria"...

Often found high-up in the trees... and usually in full sunlight... this plant blooms heaviest in Western Mexico around Christmas time. The brightly colored flowers are usually seen long before the plant.

{Note} Most of the photos that I have posted so far were scanned from 35mm negatives... so some of the 'detail' is lacking. For those that care... the camera was a Canon [film] Rebel XT with a 35-105mm zoom.
I wished at the time that I had a much better telephoto lens... but it is what it is....

1st photo... high up in a tree about 50 meters away...
2nd photo... zoomed in a bit... 3 separate clumps of plants...

3rd photo... different angle... same tree... notice Laelia autumnalis (larger appearing plant) on the right side of the closer limb...
    4th photo... a little closer...
