    Default Fear this cactus!

No joke.... its name is Ferocactus latispinus. I don't think it's a coincidence it sounds somewhat like fear-o-cactus! I was moving all of my plants in the sliding glass door for cleaning of the glass and carpet this afternoon, and it attacked. Drew blood, a lot of it. These spines are not only sharp, but they are exceptionally hard. Unfortunately, this isn't the first time it's attacked. I have to forgive it every time, though, as it is such a cool and very large cactus.

Motorcycle leathers (full body) for cactus handling! If insufficient protection, then Kevlar undergarments (quite attractive to hardened biker babes.)

I do like them, but the pain from the spines is very strange. It just seems to linger and linger.

    At least they're not curare-dipped.

Sounds a lot like fire ant bites (down in FL). Very nasty.

And stinging nettles. Sneaky little things that hide in the other weeds in the flower beds and then BITE. For hours...

    Cactus! Interesting...but also ouch!

I once tried to grow a cactus and several times it attacked me and sent its spines right into my skin. *shudders* Maybe cactus is just not right for me or something...I mean, cactus do look cool, but you gotta be really careful. And by the way, that Ferocactus looks interesting. Here's a hint: keep your distance from the plant and enjoy it from a few feet away!

We had several of these barrel cacti in our yard in Phoenix. You didn't have to tell guests to stand clear!!! We had one in the back yard that got a neighbor's kid so we removed it.

    DON'T SIT ON IT!!!

LOL Matt! It certainly looks like a leaper--jump out at you when you least expect!

Very cool cactus though--must have taken a while to grow it that big.

Default UPDATE: It does have a soft side!

Well, this angry looking cactus, aptly known as Fe(a)r-o-cactus latispinus, actually does have a soft side. It put out three blooms this summer, which took months to develop, but which are dying just a few days after opening. The first one is spent already, the second just opened, and the third you can see has yet to open up. Thought it was worth a follow-up as it's the first time it's bloomed for me (I've had about 3 years now).
